Disaster Management Bureau The Disaster Management Bureau was formed in 1993 with the objective of coordinating disaster activities, raising public awareness, data collection and management, conducting research, disaster preparedness and mitigation at local and national levels and providing assistance in disaster management. The bureau was formed as a result of the urgency felt at home and abroad to protect against natural disasters after the catastrophic cyclone and tidal wave of April 29, 1991, just two and a half years after the catastrophic floods of 1981. Its main goal is to achieve self-reliance and ensure sustainable development through proper use of national resources in the future. Its main functions are: disaster preparedness at disaster prone district, upazila and union level; Continuation of training action planning programs on disaster management to increase public awareness; Coordinate overall disaster management activities; Collecting disaster information and building a database and acting as an expert department of the government on disasters etc. As the head of the bureau, a director general has the power to take all decisions directly from the administrative control of the ministry. Foreign and local consultants and four directors assisted him in making the decision. The Disaster Management Bureau is funded by the Revenue Budget of the Government of Bangladesh and financial assistance from UNDP and UNICEF. At the field level, the Bureau does not have its own organizational structure; Activities are conducted at district, upazila and union level with the assistance of Deputy Commissioner, District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer and Upazila Project Implementation Officer and Union Parishad Chairman. The organization has a joint program with NGOs.
